Welcome to the first month of the photography competition, where we launch a word or a theme around Portugality and you let your imagination flow around it.
The first word is:
DESENRASCAR. (de·sen·ras·car [ʤizı̃jxasˈkar])
Often described as a word needed to have a translation into multiple languages for its virtues in daily life, Desenrascar (loosely translatable as "disentanglement") is a Portuguese word used, in common language, to express an ability to solve a problem without having the knowledge or the adequate tools to do so, by use of imaginative resources or by applying knowledge to new situations. It’s artful disentanglement from a problem: throwing together a costume right before a party using the clothes already hanging in your wardrobe, propping up a wobbly table leg using the novel in your bag, or just about anything you do with duct tape.
Achieved when resulting in a hypothetical and perfectly good-enough solution. Portuguese people, strongly believe it to be one of the our most valued virtues and a living part of our culture, even considering it a form of 'art'.
Send your pictures to JRC-SEMESTRE-PT@ec.europa.eu with [Photos] in the subject of the email.
