Photo Competition - June - "POPULAR"

June is the month that we conclude our competition so we want to celebrate, of course. Usually this is the month when everyone, from the most northern to the most southern point of Portugal celebrates in the most spontaneous way. June is the month of the Popular Saints, the month where everyone comes to the streets and eats and drinks ridiculous amounts of grilled sardines and beer and wine. But most importantly, we dance with our loved ones, with the neighbors or with the grandmother who forgets about her cane and for a brief amount of time is young again. So, come celebrate with us. We want to see your "Popular" photos. We wish to see the photos that represent your own traditions, your parties, your laughter, what makes you feel alive. That's it. The theme for the photography competition for June is free. What is Popular to you?  We are eager to receiving your pictures. Send your pictures to JRC-SEMESTRE-PT@ec.europa.eu with [Photos] in the subject of the email. Add to Calendar 2021-04-01 00:00:01 2021-04-30 23:59:59 Photo Competition - April Hello everyone! Welcome to the third month of the photography competition, where we launch a word or a theme around Portugality and you let your imagination flow around it. For the month of April our word is: LIBERDADE ~ LIBERTÀ ~ FREEDOM (li.ber.da.de - libərˈdad(ə) ) April is the month of freedom for Portugal (but also for Italy). It was on the dawn of the 25th of April of 1974 that a group of free men from the army initiated the revolution that would free the country after decades of dictatorship. In this day, the people came to the streets and made sure that the militarily-initiated revolution would have the support of the people in the streets and that it would not be reversed. In what would be known as the "Revolução dos Cravos" or "Carnation Revolution", this was a peaceful and bloodless revolution that would make way for Portugal to finally free itself from the chains of fascism.  The streets were the place where the revolution was made and through graffiti the people would often, after that day, use the walls of our cities to express their views. After more than forty years of repression a cultural and artistic movement was suddenly born and the country was flooded by literature, paintings and music everywhere. This revolution would even turn April as a synonym of ideals to be achieved, as in "Let's make April happen" So. This month, the subject for your Photography is "Liberdade/Libertà/Freedom".  We are eager to receiving your pictures. Hello everyone!

Welcome to the third month of the photography competition, where we launch a word or a theme around Portugality and you let your imagination flow around it.

For the month of April our word is:

LIBERDADE ~ LIBERTÀ ~ FREEDOM (li.ber.da.de - libərˈdad(ə) )

April is the month of freedom for Portugal (but also for Italy).

This revolution would even turn April as a synonym of ideals to be achieved, as in "Let's make April happen"

So. This month, the subject for your Photography is "Liberdade/Libertà/Freedom".

Photo exhibition in the spotlight: “Hope”

You know the feeling of walking into a photo exhibition and being transported to somewhere else?

This is what we feel when we take the visit to the recently launched online exhibition “Hope”, forgetting where we are and embarking on a world of emotions. "Hope" portrays Portugal in its purest form.

At the invitation of the Portuguese Presidency, photographer Alfredo Cunha premieres his “Hope” exhibition, a project intended to portray the current social situation in Portugal, while at the same time showing the reality of the country to Europe. An exhibition that begins and ends with hope.

Divided into four blocks (youth, work, COVID-19 and landscape), the photographs — approximately 150 images — consist of a slideshow representing the country from the 1970s to the present day.

According to the artist, the particular nature of this exhibition lies “in its twofold message: showing who we are, but also not hiding our problems, our difficulties, the reason why we need Europe”.

We invite you to escape for a few minutes from the four walls of your home and visit this online photo exhibition which shows a social portrait of Portugal.

For the month of March our word is:     DISCOVERY ~ DESCOBRIMENTO (des.co.bri.men.to [dəʃkubriˈmẽtu] You may have seen our roundabout symbol, our armilar sphere. Well, this and other breakthroughs come from the Discoveries times. Discovery can be defined by the action or process of discovering or being discovered., but for Portugal and the Portuguese people, the Discoveries also mean a period of economical prosperity and advancements in science, which in general make us proud. The Discoveries were a period, between the XV and XVIII centuries, where the Portuguese have made maritime expeditions towards unknown continents and have established important new ways of trade between the East Indies, the American continent and mainland Europe.  Most importantly the Discoveries represent, for us, a sense of pride in the way that these people have left their homeland, in nutshell-sized boats looking for something new, something exciting. Similarly to what most of us are doing at the JRC. Getting out of our comfort zones and using the scientific method to discover something new, for a greater good. So. This month, the subject for your Photography is "DISCOVERY". A broad theme that can mean so much for so many. From the eyes of a child or the mind of a scientist. We are eager to receive your ideas. The first word is: DESENRASCAR. (de·sen·ras·car [ʤizı̃jxasˈkar])  Often described as a word needed to have a translation into multiple languages for its virtues in daily life, Desenrascar (loosely translatable as "disentanglement") is a Portuguese word used, in common language, to express an ability to solve a problem without having the knowledge or the adequate tools to do so, by use of imaginative resources or by applying knowledge to new situations. It’s artful disentanglement from a problem: throwing together a costume right before a party using the clothes already hanging in your wardrobe, propping up a wobbly table leg using the novel in your bag, or just about anything you do with duct tape. Achieved when resulting in a hypothetical and perfectly good-enough solution. Portuguese people, strongly believe it to be one of the our most valued virtues and a living part of our culture, even considering it a form of 'art'.
